How to Measure a Hall for an Indoor Bouncy Castle

Hiring a bouncy castle indoors can make party planning much easier, particularly when the weather is unreliable. Before choosing an inflatable, however, you need accurate measurements of the space that can actually be used.

A hall advertised as 30ft long does not necessarily provide 30ft of clear setup space. Stages, cupboards, radiators, serving counters, furniture and doorways can all reduce the usable area. You also need to measure upwards because ceiling height can be just as important as floor space.

This guide explains exactly what to measure before booking your indoor bouncy castle.

What Measurements Do You Need from the Hall?

There are three main measurements to collect:

  1. Usable floor length
  2. Usable floor width
  3. Lowest clear ceiling height

You should also check the width of doors and access routes, the location of power sockets and anything that could obstruct the setup.

Hall Measurements to Write Down

  • Clear floor length
  • Clear floor width
  • Lowest usable ceiling height
  • Width of the venue entrance
  • Width of any internal doors
  • Location of mains power sockets
  • Position of stages, beams, lights and other fixed features

How Do You Measure the Usable Floor Space?

Start by identifying the part of the hall where you would ideally like the bouncy castle to go.

Measure the clear distance from one usable edge to the other. Do not simply use the dimensions printed on the venue website because those may describe the whole room rather than the unobstructed area.

Exclude anything that will remain in place during the party, including:

  • fixed stages;
  • storage cupboards;
  • radiators;
  • serving areas;
  • permanent seating;
  • pillars;
  • doors that need to remain clear;
  • tables and chairs you intend to use.

Our guide to how much space a bouncy castle needs explains why the inflatable dimensions are only part of the overall setup requirement.

Why Isn't the Product Size Enough?

If a bouncy castle is described as 12ft x 12ft, that is the approximate footprint of the inflatable itself. It does not mean that a 12ft x 12ft empty room is suitable.

Additional room is required around the inflatable for correct installation and use. The blower and associated equipment also need space.

For this reason, always compare your hall measurements with the complete setup requirements on the individual product page rather than relying only on the dimensions in its name.

How Big Are Some of Our Indoor Bouncy Castle Options?

The table below shows how the listed footprints vary between some of the bouncy castles in our current range.

Photo Bouncy Castle Listed Size Hall Planning
Blue Party Theme Low Height Bouncy Castle Blue Party Theme Bouncy Castle (10ft x 12ft)

£90

10ft x 12ft A lower-height option worth investigating where ceiling clearance is limited.
Multi Coloured Party Theme Bouncy Castle Multi Coloured Party Theme Bouncy Castle (12ft x 12ft)

£100

12ft x 12ft A standard party-sized inflatable for halls with enough clear floor area and height.
3D Jungle Bouncy Castle 3D Jungle Bouncy Castle (12ft x 12ft)

£100

12ft x 12ft A themed option with the same listed footprint as several standard designs.
Multi-coloured Party Front Slide Combo Bouncy Castle Multi-coloured Party Front Slide Combo Bouncy Castle (15ft x 12ft)

£120

15ft x 12ft Requires more clear length than the 12ft x 12ft designs because it combines bouncing with a front slide.

These are the listed inflatable footprints, not the total installation dimensions. Check the individual product page before booking.

How Do You Measure the Ceiling Height?

Use the lowest clear point above the proposed inflatable position.

Do not measure only from the floor to the main ceiling if something hangs lower. Look carefully for:

  • wooden or steel beams;
  • light fittings;
  • projectors;
  • speakers;
  • basketball hoops;
  • heaters;
  • decorations or suspended equipment.

If a beam runs through the middle of the room, for example, the height underneath that beam may be more important than the height of the ceiling around it.

Our guide to the ceiling height needed for a bouncy castle looks at this subject in more detail.

What If the Hall Has a Low Ceiling?

You may still be able to hire an inflatable if the venue can accommodate a lower-height model.

Blue Party Theme Low Height Bouncy Castle for an indoor hall

Low-Height Indoor Option

The Blue Party Theme Bouncy Castle (10ft x 12ft) is part of our Low Height Bouncy Castles range.

It costs £90 and can be worth considering for suitable halls where a taller inflatable would not have enough overhead clearance.

Read low-height bouncy castles: what are they and when do you need one? if ceiling height is likely to determine your choice.

How Do You Check the Access Route?

Once you know the inflatable fits inside the room, make sure we can actually get it there.

We normally require clear access at least 2.6ft wide. Some larger inflatables can require up to 3ft.

Measure any narrow parts of the route, including:

  • the main entrance;
  • internal doors;
  • corridors;
  • gates;
  • tight turns.

Also let us know about steps or any other unusual access conditions before booking.

Where Is the Power Socket?

Indoor inflatables require a standard mains electricity supply for the blower.

Jump N Joy Castles carries 25m extension leads as standard and can provide up to 50m where required if arranged beforehand.

When measuring your chosen setup position, note where the closest suitable socket is located. This can help avoid choosing a part of the hall that looks ideal but is impractical for the equipment.

How Much Space Should You Leave for Tables and Guests?

Do not measure the entire hall for the bouncy castle and then try to squeeze the rest of the party into whatever is left.

Leave space for:

  • party tables and chairs;
  • parents and carers;
  • food and drinks;
  • the birthday cake;
  • bags and coats;
  • clear walkways;
  • entrances and exits.

A smaller inflatable in a comfortable room layout can often work better than filling most of the hall with the largest option available.

What If You Want Soft Play in the Hall Too?

If younger children are attending, you may want to create a separate Soft Play area.

Multicoloured Soft Play and Ball Pit for indoor halls

Planning a Toddler Area?

The Multicoloured Soft play and Ball pit is available for £90 and is for indoor use.

Measure a separate area for the soft play rather than using every remaining part of the hall after the bouncy castle has been positioned.

If you are deciding between the two types of entertainment, our soft play or bouncy castle guide can help.

How Much Space Do Didi Cars Need?

Didi Cars need their own suitable smooth, hard indoor floor area.

The 4 x Didi cars can work as an additional indoor activity where enough open floor remains, while the 6 x Didi Cars & Race Track requires considerably more room.

Do not plan a Didi Car route through the bouncy castle entrance, soft play area or seating. Treat it as its own activity zone when measuring the room.

What If You Are Booking a Party Package?

If you want one of our Party Packages, measure for the complete setup rather than just the inflatable.

For example, the Low Height Bouncy Castle Party Package is designed around a lower-height inflatable, but the additional equipment still needs its own room.

The PARTY THEME BOUNCY CASTLE PARTY PACKAGE and 3D BOUNCY CASTLE WITH SLIDE PARTY PACKAGE also require more space than a single bouncy castle booking.

What Is the Easiest Way to Record Your Hall Measurements?

Measurement Your Figure Remember
Usable floor length __________ Exclude stages and fixed obstacles.
Usable floor width __________ Leave room for the rest of the party.
Lowest clear ceiling height __________ Measure below beams and lights.
Narrowest doorway __________ Check the whole delivery route.
Distance to mains socket __________ Tell us if a longer lead may be required.

Should You Measure the Hall Before Booking the Bouncy Castle?

Yes. Measuring first gives you a realistic shortlist of equipment rather than choosing a bouncy castle and hoping it fits.

The best order is:

  1. Find a suitable venue.
  2. Confirm that inflatables are permitted.
  3. Measure the usable floor space.
  4. Measure the lowest ceiling height.
  5. Check access and power.
  6. Choose an inflatable that comfortably suits those measurements.
