How to Plan a First Birthday with Soft Play

A first birthday party does not need a huge amount of entertainment to work well. For a one-year-old, the best setup is usually one that gives babies and toddlers somewhere suitable to play while adults have enough room to sit, chat and supervise.

Soft play can provide that central activity without taking over the whole event. From there, you can decide whether you need anything extra for older siblings, cousins or family friends.

The easiest way to plan the party is to start with your guest list, then choose the venue and equipment around the children who will actually be there.

How Many Young Children Are Coming?

Start by roughly separating the children into age groups. You do not need exact numbers immediately, but it helps to know whether the party will mainly involve babies and toddlers or whether several older children are coming too.

A simple guest list might look like this:

  • birthday child and other one-year-olds;
  • toddlers;
  • preschool children;
  • older brothers and sisters;
  • school-age cousins and friends.

If most of the children are very young, Soft Play can form the main entertainment. If the age range is wider, it can become one activity zone within a larger indoor setup.

What Soft Play Can You Hire for a First Birthday?

Multicoloured Soft Play and Ball Pit for a first birthday

Multicoloured Soft Play & Ball Pit

The Multicoloured Soft play and Ball pit is available for £90.

It is an indoor option for younger children and can provide the main play area at a first birthday without needing a much larger setup.

How Much Equipment Do You Actually Need?

More equipment does not automatically make a first birthday better. The right setup depends on the guest list, venue and age range.

Party Type Possible Setup Why It May Work
Mainly babies and toddlers Soft play and ball pit Keeps the party focused on the youngest guests without filling the room with equipment they will not use.
Toddlers plus a few older siblings Soft play plus Didi Cars Creates two separate activity areas without necessarily needing a bouncy castle.
Wide mixed-age guest list Soft play plus suitable bouncy castle Allows younger and older children to use different equipment.
Larger hall and several age groups Party package Useful when you want several activities together and the venue has room for a complete setup.

What Can You Add for Older Siblings?

If the birthday child has older brothers or sisters, giving them their own activity can make the party easier to manage.

Didi Cars can be used indoors on a suitable smooth, hard floor and can work well where the hall has enough open space.

Photo Indoor Extra When to Choose It Price
Four Didi Cars for older children at a first birthday party 4 x Didi cars When you want a relatively compact additional activity. £30
Six Didi Cars and Race Track for an indoor first birthday party 6 x Didi Cars & Race Track For larger halls where there is room to create a separate riding zone. £90

What If Several Older Children Are Coming?

If soft play alone will not cover the age range, a suitable indoor bouncy castle can give older children their own activity.

The venue needs enough floor space and ceiling clearance for both setups, and the two areas should not be squeezed together.

Blue Party Low Height Bouncy Castle for a mixed age first birthday party

Low-Height Bouncy Castle Option

The Blue Party Theme Bouncy Castle (10ft x 12ft) costs £90 and may suit some indoor venues where ceiling height is more restricted.

If you are considering an inflatable as well as soft play, check the complete venue dimensions first.

How to measure a hall for an indoor bouncy castle explains the measurements to collect before booking.

Could You Book Everything as a Package?

A larger mixed-age party may suit one of our Party Packages rather than several separate bookings.

Photo Package Consider It If... Price
Low Height Bouncy Castle Party Package Low Height Bouncy Castle Party Package You have a suitable indoor venue where ceiling height needs more consideration. £170
Party Theme Bouncy Castle Party Package PARTY THEME BOUNCY CASTLE PARTY PACKAGE There are enough older children to justify a broader activity setup. £180

Always check the full package contents and setup requirements before deciding whether a package suits your hall.

What Kind of Venue Works Well for Soft Play?

Soft play is for indoor use, so choose somewhere with enough clear floor space and a layout that allows adults to supervise easily.

Useful features include:

  • a clean, suitable indoor floor;
  • enough room around the soft play area;
  • chairs for parents and carers;
  • a separate food table;
  • toilets and baby-changing facilities;
  • space for buggies and bags;
  • easy access for setup and collection.

The hall does not have to be enormous. It simply needs to provide enough usable room for the setup you choose.

Where Should the Soft Play Go?

Try to make the toddler area visible from the main parent seating without placing chairs directly around it.

A corner or one side of the hall can work well because it keeps the soft play together while leaving the rest of the room available for seating, food or older children's entertainment.

Avoid placing food tables immediately next to the equipment.

Do You Need a Strict Party Schedule?

Probably not. A first birthday usually works better with a loose structure than a tightly organised programme.

You might divide the time into:

  • arrival and free play;
  • food and drinks;
  • more play;
  • birthday cake;
  • photos and presents;
  • a quieter period before the end.

This gives younger children flexibility if they become tired or need a break.

What About Nap Time?

If you can, plan the party around the birthday child's normal routine rather than expecting them to adapt to the event.

A party starting just as they normally go to sleep can make the whole day harder than it needs to be. Consider their usual meal and nap times when choosing your venue slot.

How Should You Handle Food and Drinks?

Keep refreshments in a separate part of the room from the soft play.

Ask the venue whether:

  • outside food is permitted;
  • there is a kitchen;
  • a fridge is available;
  • tables and chairs are supplied;
  • you need to remove your own rubbish.

This can be just as important as the entertainment when choosing between venues.

What Should You Ask Before Booking the Hall?

If you plan to add a bouncy castle or other equipment, tell the venue before confirming the room.

Our guide to what to ask a venue before booking a bouncy castle party covers floor space, ceiling height, access, power and setup times.

For a soft-play-only first birthday, also ask about baby-changing facilities, tables, chairs and the amount of time you have before and after the party.

First Birthday Party Checklist

  1. Count the children by age group. This tells you whether soft play alone is enough.
  2. Choose an indoor venue. Make sure there is enough usable floor space.
  3. Book the soft play. Build the toddler area first.
  4. Add older-child activities only if needed. Didi Cars, a suitable inflatable or a package may work.
  5. Plan seating and food separately. Do not crowd the play zone.
  6. Consider naps and meals. Keep the timing realistic for a one-year-old.
  7. Leave the schedule flexible. Free play is often more useful than organised games at this age.
