How to Measure Your Garden for a Bouncy Castle
Before booking a bouncy castle for your garden, measure the usable setup area rather than the garden as a whole. A lawn can look spacious until you take fences, sheds, flower beds, trees, furniture and access routes into account.
The dimensions shown in a bouncy castle name describe the inflatable itself, not the full area needed for installation. You will need additional room around the equipment, as well as suitable access and a standard mains power supply.
This guide explains what to measure, what to leave out and how to compare your garden with the bouncy castles in our range.
Start with the Part of the Garden You Can Actually Use
Do not measure from one property boundary to another and assume all of that space is available.
Choose the part of the lawn where you would realistically like the inflatable installed, then measure the clear usable length and width.
Exclude areas occupied by:
- sheds and summer houses;
- trees and low branches;
- flower beds and raised borders;
- garden furniture;
- trampolines and climbing frames;
- ponds and water features;
- paths and patios;
- artificial grass;
- other party equipment.
If you are unsure how much additional room an inflatable needs beyond its listed footprint, read how much space do you need for a bouncy castle?.
How Do You Measure the Garden?
A tape measure is the simplest tool for the job. Record the clear length and width of the grass area you want to use, then check whether anything projects into that space.
Garden Measurements to Write Down
- Usable grass length: __________
- Usable grass width: __________
- Narrowest access point: __________
- Distance to mains socket: __________
- Any slopes or uneven areas: __________
- Any nearby trees, sheds or other obstacles: __________
Once you have those figures, you can compare them with the individual product requirements rather than guessing from photographs.
Why Is the Inflatable Footprint Not the Full Setup Size?
If a bouncy castle is listed as 12ft x 12ft, that does not mean a 12ft x 12ft lawn is large enough.
Extra clear space is needed around the inflatable for correct installation and use. The blower and associated equipment also need room, so the complete setup occupies more than the footprint shown in the product name.
This is why it is better to send us your garden measurements if the available space is close to the minimum.
How Big Are Some of Our Bouncy Castles?
The examples below show how the listed dimensions vary between several of our current bouncy castles.
Listed dimensions describe the inflatable itself. Additional installation space is required, so check the full product requirements before booking.
Does the Garden Need to Be Grass?
For our outdoor inflatable bookings, the setup area needs to be suitable natural grass.
We do not install outdoor bouncy castles on concrete, tarmac, gravel or artificial grass.
If you are not sure whether your surface can be used, read what surfaces can a bouncy castle be set up on?. If your garden is mainly artificial turf, can bouncy castles go on artificial grass? explains the policy more specifically.
What If Only Part of the Garden Is Grass?
Measure only the suitable natural grass section.
For example, if your garden is 30ft long but the first 12ft is patio, do not count the patio when measuring the inflatable setup area. The useful measurement is the clear grass that remains.
The same applies if artificial turf, flower beds or other unsuitable areas divide the garden.
Does the Garden Need to Be Level?
The proposed position should be reasonably level. A large lawn may still be unsuitable if the only clear section has a significant slope.
Look carefully at the ground rather than judging it only from the house. If you are unsure whether the gradient is suitable, tell us before the booking.
How Close Can the Bouncy Castle Be to a Fence or Wall?
Do not plan to fit the inflatable tightly between boundaries or buildings.
The complete installation needs clear space around it, which is why the dimensions in the product title should not be treated as the exact garden space required.
If your garden measurements are only slightly larger than the inflatable itself, contact us before booking rather than assuming it will fit.
What About Trees and Overhanging Branches?
Trees can reduce usable space even when the trunk itself sits outside the area you have measured.
Check for:
- low branches;
- overhanging foliage;
- tree roots affecting the ground;
- bushes projecting into the setup area.
The space above and around the inflatable should be clear.
How Wide Does the Garden Access Need to Be?
The next measurement is the route into the garden.
Jump N Joy Castles generally requires clear access of at least 2.6ft, while some larger inflatables may need up to 3ft.
Measure the narrowest part of the route rather than only the garden gate. Check:
- side passages;
- gates;
- spaces between walls and bins;
- tight turns;
- steps or other restrictions.
Let us know before booking if access is limited.
How Far Away Can the Power Socket Be?
The bouncy castle blower needs a standard mains electricity supply.
We carry 25m extension leads as standard and can provide up to 50m where required if arranged in advance.
When measuring the garden, think about where the nearest suitable socket is in relation to the inflatable position. Do not assume a socket on the opposite side of the property will automatically be practical.
Can You Use the Whole Garden for Party Equipment?
It is usually better not to.
Leave room for children and adults to move around without passing directly through the inflatable setup area. You may also need space for:
- tables and chairs;
- food and drinks;
- bins;
- other party equipment;
- access between the house and garden.
A slightly smaller bouncy castle can sometimes give you a much more practical party layout.
What If You Want a Bounce and Slide?
Bounce-and-slide designs generally need more usable length than our standard 12ft x 12ft bouncy castles.
If your garden is narrow, measuring before choosing between a standard bouncy castle and a front-slide model is especially important.
What If You Want a Larger Inflatable?
Large inflatables need considerably more room.
The Large Party Bouncy Castle (16x16ft) is listed at 16ft x 16ft, while the 40ft Party Energy Obstacle Course requires a much longer setup area.
For a garden booking, do not choose these types of equipment until you are confident that the usable grass area is comfortably large enough.
Can You Add Soft Play or Didi Cars Outside?
Our Soft Play is for indoor use, so it should not be included when measuring an outdoor garden setup.
Didi Cars also need a suitable smooth, hard indoor floor rather than grass.
If you want a mixed setup including a bouncy castle, soft play and Didi Cars, a suitable indoor venue may be a better option.
What If Rain Is Forecast?
Even a perfectly measured garden still depends on suitable weather and ground conditions.

Should You Measure Before Choosing the Bouncy Castle?
Yes. It is much easier to choose from suitable inflatables once you know the genuine usable dimensions of the garden.
The best order is:
- Measure the clear natural grass area.
- Check the ground and nearby obstacles.
- Measure the access route.
- Check the distance to mains power.
- Compare those details with the product requirements.
- Choose the bouncy castle that comfortably suits the available space.
If this is your first booking, our complete guide to hiring a bouncy castle for the first time covers the wider process too.
