Can Bouncy Castles Go on Artificial Grass?
If you have artificial grass in your garden, it is important to check the setup requirements before booking a bouncy castle. An inflatable cannot simply be placed wherever there appears to be enough room. The surface underneath it affects how the equipment can be installed and secured.
At Jump N Joy Castles, our outdoor bouncy castles are set up on suitable natural grass. We do not install outdoor inflatables on artificial grass, concrete, tarmac, gravel or other hard outdoor surfaces.
If your garden is covered with artificial turf, an indoor venue may be the better option.
Why Can't We Set Up a Bouncy Castle on Artificial Grass?
A bouncy castle needs to be properly secured as part of the installation. Outdoor setups on suitable natural grass allow the correct anchoring equipment to be used.
Artificial grass often sits above a prepared base, membrane or hard surface. That means the ground underneath may not be suitable for the type of anchoring required for an outdoor inflatable.
Rather than making assumptions about what is underneath the turf, our outdoor setup policy is straightforward: suitable natural grass is required.
Which Outdoor Surfaces Can We Use?
The table below gives a simple overview of the common surfaces customers ask us about.
| Surface |
Outdoor Setup? |
What to Know |
| Suitable natural grass |
Yes |
This is our standard outdoor setup surface, provided the ground is suitable, reasonably level and there is enough clear space for the inflatable. |
| Artificial grass |
No |
We do not install outdoor inflatables on artificial turf. |
| Concrete |
No |
We do not set up bouncy castles on hard outdoor concrete surfaces. |
| Tarmac |
No |
Tarmac is not suitable for our outdoor bouncy castle installations. |
| Gravel |
No |
Loose or hard gravel surfaces are not used for our outdoor setups. |
| Suitable indoor flooring |
Indoors only |
Indoor bouncy castle hire can be possible in a suitable hall or venue with enough floor space, ceiling height, access and power. |

What If My Garden Is Mostly Artificial Grass?
If the entire usable garden is artificial turf, we would not install an outdoor inflatable there. You may still have other options, depending on your event.
The simplest alternative is often to hire a suitable indoor hall. This can also remove some of the uncertainty caused by poor weather and gives you the option of holding a party during autumn or winter.
Can you put a bouncy castle indoors? explains the main requirements, while our complete indoor bouncy castle hire guide goes into more detail about floor space, ceiling height, access and power.
What If Part of My Garden Is Natural Grass?
If you have a section of suitable natural grass that is large enough for the inflatable and the required clearance, that area may potentially be used instead of the artificial turf.
Measure the usable grass section rather than the overall garden. Paths, flower beds, sheds, furniture, trees and artificial grass areas all reduce the space available for installation.
Our guide to measuring your garden for a bouncy castle explains how to record the space before choosing an inflatable.
Does the Natural Grass Need to Be Level?
The setup area should be reasonably level and clear of obstacles. A steep slope or unsuitable ground can prevent installation even if the lawn appears large enough on paper.
Before we arrive, remove toys, garden furniture, play equipment and other items from the proposed setup area. If you are uncertain about the condition of the ground, let us know before the event.
Can You Put Mats Under a Bouncy Castle on Artificial Grass Instead?
No. Adding mats underneath the inflatable does not change our outdoor surface policy. The issue is not simply protecting the artificial grass. The inflatable still needs to be installed and secured correctly.
For that reason, we do not use artificial turf for outdoor bouncy castle installations.
What If the Artificial Grass Has Soil Underneath It?
Artificial lawns can be installed in different ways, and what appears to be soil underneath may still include membranes, compacted bases or other materials.
We therefore do not base a booking on assumptions about the construction underneath the artificial grass. Outdoor inflatables are set up on suitable natural grass.
Can I Use a Bouncy Castle on a Patio or Driveway Instead?
No. Moving the inflatable from artificial grass onto concrete, paving, tarmac or another hard outdoor area does not provide a suitable alternative for our service.
If there is no suitable natural grass available, consider an indoor venue instead.
What Should I Check Before Booking an Outdoor Bouncy Castle?
Outdoor Setup Checklist
- Is the proposed area suitable natural grass?
- Is the ground reasonably level?
- Is there enough usable space for the inflatable and additional clearance?
- Is the area free from trees, furniture, toys and other obstructions?
- Is there clear access to the garden?
- Is a standard mains power socket available within a suitable distance?
If you are unsure how large the setup area needs to be, how much space do you need for a bouncy castle? explains why you need more room than the inflatable's stated footprint.
Can I Hire a Smaller Bouncy Castle If I Have Less Natural Grass?
Possibly, provided the remaining natural grass area is large enough for the complete installation.
Choosing a smaller inflatable can help when garden space is limited. For example, our Blue Party Theme Bouncy Castle (10ft x 12ft) has a smaller footprint than some of the larger inflatables in our range.
Standard options such as the Multi Coloured Party Theme Bouncy Castle (12ft x 12ft) may also suit some gardens, but the full setup area rather than the product footprint determines whether installation is possible.
What If Rain Has Made the Grass Wet?
The surface is only one part of an outdoor booking. Weather and ground conditions can also affect whether an inflatable can be used safely.
If poor weather is forecast, read can you hire a bouncy castle in the rain? and what happens if the weather is bad on the day of my bouncy castle hire?.
Could an Indoor Party Be Easier?
If your garden is entirely artificial grass, hiring a hall can solve the surface problem completely. It can also be useful for parties during periods when the weather is less predictable.
For halls with restricted ceiling height, take a look at our Low Height Bouncy Castles and read when a low-height bouncy castle may be needed.
You can also use our venue guides when looking for suitable local party spaces, including options in Bath, Yate, Portishead, Keynsham and Thornbury.
Where Do We Provide Bouncy Castle Hire?
Jump N Joy Castles provides suitable bouncy castle hire in South Gloucestershire, Bristol, Chippenham and Bath, together with Yate, Keynsham, Thornbury, Portishead and Bradley Stoke.
Outdoor bookings require a suitable setup area. If your garden has artificial grass or you are not sure whether the remaining natural grass is large enough, contact us before booking.
Not Sure Whether Your Garden Is Suitable?
Measure the usable natural grass area and let us know what surrounds it. If possible, include details about access, slopes and any obstacles close to the proposed setup location.
